My Little Rose: Pediatric Dermatologist

Last week I realized that the bump on the side of my Little Rose’s eye hadn’t gone down. In the beginning I thought she had gotten a little bump, a casualty from learning to crawl and stand. But when it didn’t go away, or go down at all, I knew something was up. We went to the pediatrician only to be told that it was probably a cyst… but could also be cancer. TERROR insued. Thank god in the end we found out that it was a cyst, and so the next step was to visit the pediatric dermatologist.

Today we went to the dermatologists office. A very old doctor walked into the exam room. He was sweet, and grandfatherly, and just plain awesome, which was a wonderful foil for the roiling anxiety I was feeling. My body, mind and system are just so stressed out from everything going on with my Little Cricket that ANYTHING that happens is causing ripples in my calm. It totally sucks, I am working on it.

After the exam the doctor stated that my Little Rose has a Dermoid Cyst. There are two kinds, the scary midline one (which she doesn’t have) and the less scary side one (which is the one she has). He printed up a sheet of information on it for me. Basically it was a cyst that she was born with, it was always there but it was tiny under the surface of her skin. As she gets older the cyst will grow, and there is no telling how big it will get. The only way to get rid of it will be surgery. Thankfully it is an easy surgery but still giving a small baby anesthesia is nothing to take on lightly. He suggested that since the cyst is mostly cosmetic at this point to leave it until my Little Rose gets a little older. We are going to keep it monitored, there will be a line where eventually it will have to be removed, however if we can wait until my Little Rose is 1.5 or 2 years old there is less risk.

We will come back for a follow-up in three months and in the mean time I will have to start researching pediatric plastic surgeons. Don’t you worry my baby, everything is going to be just fine!
