Family Road Trip - Day 8: Lost Maples

We woke up this morning in our tiny tiny cabin, got ready, and headed to my parents place. After a great breakfast, one that wasn’t eaten from a hotel continental breakfast, we started to discuss what we were going to do with our day. Rain was in the forecast this week, but today was supposed to be gloriously beautiful so we knew we wanted to get outside. With all the time in the car we really wanted to get out and stretch our legs. We looked around our area and found a pretty place to hike, one that touted to have glorious fall foliage. After getting everything ready we headed out the door in our rental car, which thankfully had a third row so we could all fit. My mom entertained my Little Cricket, which was such a joy to watch.

We got there, bundled up in long sweaters because it was a little brisk and started our easy hike. It was beautiful and we were all happy to be out. The path was full of large rocks which made it hard for my Little Cricket to walk. But we made it through. After a while the path evened out.

Then we were all feeling good when we reached where we were supposed ‘we think’ turn back. But then for some reason we just kept going. It was only 4.5 miles, we should be fine right. GOD we were wrong. So so wrong. The hike started going up, it started going up steep, and the rocks, the rocks came back with a vengeance. My Little Cricket made it some of the way and then he refused to go any further. So we carried him, we all took turns, my dad ended up throwing him up on his shoulders and while we kept walking he started nodding off. At this point we were ALL exhausted. So so so tired. Carrying kids, and camera equipment. But we were all going, or we were all going down together.

The fall foliage wasn’t exactly ready. A few more weeks and it would have been perfect. But it was still beautiful. Oh so beautiful.

We made it back to the car. We made it out alive. Mom made turkey burgers for dinner and then we all went to bed early. Nothing like a very long hike to make for a good night’s sleep.
