Family Road Trip - Day 5: White Sands National Park

We had a slow morning. We were all exhausted from the long days and just took it extra slow this morning. We had a pilfered continental breakfast in our room again before we packed up the car. We are getting QUITE efficient at this whole packing and unpacking the trunk.

We were super excited for today’s fun excursion, White Sands National Park, the research I did of this place… it looks incredible. So we drove, and we drove, the closest hotel I could find was an hour away. We were again in the middle of nowhere. I was confused, as far as we could see was brush and nothing. Just brush and nothing. And then we went over a tiny little rise and all we could see was white. We arrived.

We were here, we wanted to get out and play but the kids were asleep. So we got out one at a time. First Mr. Rogue and then me. We ran up the first hill we saw and then rolled down like little kids. WEEEEEEEE. And PS, that white sand is fine, powdery, sticky, gypsum that will not come off.

Finally the kids woke up. I fed my Little Rose her bottle and gave my Little Cricket a pedisure. He wouldn’t eat anything, he’s super picky, but at least he drank his whole pedisure. And then we packed up and went on a hike. Last month some hikers got lost here with their kids, the couple died, their child lived, because they went off the trails. Hearing that we were not going off the trials. This is a desert, a white desert of nothingness, there was no way we were getting lost in the nothingness. So we took one of the easier hikes. We stayed on the trail. We put on tons of sunscreen, what with the whole reflective white desert. And we made sure to all drink plenty of fluids. We were hoping to do the whole hike but my Little Cricket kinds got super tired and refused to keep going. So we turned back and headed to the car.

Back at the car I offered the baby a bottle and my Little Cricket lunch. But he wouldn’t eat. I figured he was just being picky, so I gave him the rest of the pedisure. Apparently there is such a thing as too much. He got sick everywhere. Threw up all over himself, all over the car, BLECK! Poor baby. Mr. Rogue and I got him cleaned up, got the car seat cleaned up, gave him some water and within ten minutes he was sleeping. I really hope he was just tired and he isn’t coming down with something. While he slept we had some snacks and then I stayed and played with my Little Rose while Mr. Rogue took some last photos.

Eventually we lost the light, it was time to go. We had sand EVERYWHERE and all over the car. Everyone gets baths tonight for sure. We grabbed some quick dinner at Chili’s before heading to our next town. Carlsbad.

The hotel at Carlsbad was the nicest hotel we have stayed at for this whole project. After we got both kids cleaned up I sat down to my nightly ritual, soaking my foot in the hotel trash can (after I sanitized it). Apparently nightly soaks in hot water, pumice scrubbing, and then lotioning up before bed is the best way to treat my cracked heel. On top of my cracked heel I am also dealing with a beautiful new zit. YAY.

Super fun! Sugar sand beach without the water. Loved Mr. Rogues expressions, the squint of the sun and emptying the shoes. lmao!
