Family Road Trip - Day 1: And Here We Go – Lake Havesu

We were off today on our road trip and I am so excited I may just burst with joy. The whole trip was daunting, a 27 hour road trip with a 4 month old baby and a 2.5 year old toddler. Still we were going to be stopping at a ton of fun places along the way and we were going to take many days to make the trek. In theory it all worked out in my plan, I just hope that the actuality plays along the same lines.

Today was our longest leg in the car of the trip, 8.5 hours of driving. That is a ton of driving in a day for two little ones. But by doing this all in one day we can get to the area that we are interested in seeing. Plus I took some advice from my mother and we kept the kids up late and we left EARLY. Like Mr. Rogue and I both woke up at 4:30, we packed the last of the things we needed in the SUV and then we snuck the kids in their car seats, still in their pajamas, and immediately hit the road driving. A 5:00AM departure time allowed us to miss all the LA city traffic and it allowed both kids to fall back asleep.

When the kids woke up 3 hours later we pulled over for breakfast. We changed the kids diapers and clothes, we ate yummy food and we all got a break from the car for a bit before gassing back up and hitting the road. When planning this trip I found that there wasn’t really anything super interesting that Mr. Rogue and I haven’t seen on the way to Hallbrook. Still I had to find something that we could get out of the car and walk around for a while. So I decided to stop over for a few hours at Lake Havesu. Another two hours of driving and we arrived ready to run.

We got there and the wind was WHIPPING, the storm clouds were rolling in and so we got out of the car anyways… because it wasn’t raining yet. Man those clouds made for some awesome landscape photos (I am thinking glass half full here folks). We were able to walk for a little while. We took some photos. My Little Cricket got to throw a ton of rocks into the water… sigh, boys! And My Little Rose got to rock out the baby bijiorn for the first time. Thank goodness she loved it because the plan was for her to be worn quite a bit in the bijiorn this trip. She also got to wear her new totally adorable hat… fashionista, girls! After about a half hour it started sprinkling, and my sunny LALA land little boy did NOT like getting wet. We ran back to the safety of the car.

Back in the car we took a little scenic off the beaten path dirt road that meandered through some of the back marsh and rivers of the territory. The rain lifted a few times, and the sun even peaked through once or twice so we were able to get out some more. My Little Cricket crashed out for his nap and we got a few more good photos with my Little Rose who was still awake. We added two hours onto our already long day, but we got to see some beautiful landscapes and we got the break from the monotony of the road. We also got the SUV totally disgustingly dirty. You aren’t doing a road trip quite right if everything stays nice and clean.

Another round of diaper changes, tickles, attention and some lunch and then we were back on the road. Four more hours to go before we were due to arrive at Hollbrook. The last two hours my Little Cricket started getting fussy. He had been in the car for most of the day, I didn’t blame him. So I gave him his dinner and some snacks and I set up a movie for him on the ipad. Parents these days… we have it SO GOOD.

By the time we arrived in Hollbrook. Swung by Subway for our dinner (which was the only thing open in that tiny town) and got to our hotel it was 10:30. I checked in, we loaded up the cart with SO MUCH STUFF. The cooler, that needed to be emptied, restocked and re-iced. The diaper bag, my breast pump, the diaper bag, our perishable food, all the camera equipment and the ipad and laptop (too valuable to leave in the car), the suitcase with our clothes and toiletries and the kids we had a full load. Mr. Rogue and I got the kids bathed, changed into their pajamas and settled into bed before we were able to sit down and eat our sandwiches in the soft glow from the bathroom light.
