Kansas: Surrounded by Family

Over the next few days until the funeral we spent shuffling between the hotel where the family was all staying at and my aunt and uncles house. The house was full of family, friends, people who knew my cousin and just wanted to pop by and even total strangers who came by to donate food or flowers. This is a small community and they really steped it up and reached out during this tragedy. We made food. We passed around the baby. We exchanged gifts. And we did the best we could to share our combined greif.

At the end of a long day, my mom and I would come back to the hotel where I would attempt to get my Little Cricket to sleep. I tried putting him down in the pack and play so my mom and I could read for a bit before bed. But he didn’t do well in the pack and play, just like he didn’t do well in it during Christmas. We tried to turn out the lights and tried to be very quiet but in the end he just wouldn’t sleep. This time I just pulled him into bed with me. I didn’t get to sleep well at all. But at least he did. The only thing worse than a tired grumpy mommy is a tired grumpy baby.

My cousin is such a godsend to have around. Always whipping up enough food to feed an army. So warm and thoughtful, so helpful and beautiful. Thank you for all you do for everyone surrounding you!
