Mommy Group Session 2: Class 12

I love this mommy class, I always learn so much. It is also nice to have a place to speak to a professional about all the things that I read. There is so much knowledge, studies, theories out there and it is nearly impossible sometimes to find the right answer. Sometimes, heck often, there isnt a right answer but still it helps hashing things out with someone with so much experience.

Today our major discussion was about play, education and preschool. Now a days people want their kids to know much more before they even enter kindergarten. So the trend has been to push more and more learning at much younger ages. Allison talked about several studies that discuss the value of play. New research shows that trying to teach kids more and more at ever younger ages might backfire. Like anything balance and moderation is key.

Sadly our next subject, because we live in LA, has to be started now. We were told that we need to start looking at preschools. My Little Cricket is only 7 months, but if I want him in a top preschool come two and a half I have to start looking, getting on lists, touring, filling out applications now. I have to say that I find it CRAZY. Crazy that it is so competitive to have to do hoop jumping now when my son is still so young. My other problem is that I don’t know if I want to send my kids to school. I am thinking that I may possibly want to home school. And that thought right there is pretty crazy in itself. I still don’t know what I want to do but for now I guess I am going to enroll him in at least a few preschools so I can have options later.

We also talked about being a conscious parent. How to be the best parent that you can be. There were several books that she recommended to help unlearn some of the things that you have ingrained. I always love a good book and psychology books that talk about how a mothers brain and a child’s brain communicate to each other is right up my alley.

1. Positive Discipline: The First Three Years
2. The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Childs Developing Mind
Becoming the Parent You Want to Be: A Sourcebook of Strategies for the First Five Years

This was our last class of the session and because of the holidays they have decided not to start our next session until the second week of January. I will miss my mom friends and our weekly advice but it is nice that I won’t have to miss any classes while we travel for Christmas!
