Hawaii Reminders: Our Souvenirs

I love traditions, things that we do over and over again, year after year, that create a certain kind of beautiful comfortable dance. Whenever we go away on a vacation Mr. Rogue and I have a few traditions. First of all we love beaches and have now quite a collection of sand from our favorite beaches we have visited from around the world. The only place that I really wanted to collect sand but didn’t is the Galapagos. They have super strict regulations about removing anything from the islands. Still I love our little shelf full of sand, it always brings a smile to my face.

Our second tradition is to find a small wooden carving that reminds us of our trip. These little figurines are everywhere we have been so far but in Kauai we had a little harder time finding something we liked. In the end we picked a Tiki Pole known as Akua Kai. The ancient Hawaiians believed he was a health tiki. Our little Tiki pole now sits on a shelf with several other small carvings.

Mr. Rogue has his own little tradition when he visits someplace new, something he has been doing since he was 16 years old, collects shot glasses. Of course he picked one up when we were in Kauai. We have his collection packed away right now in a huge box in the attic and I haven’t even seen them all out at one time but it will be fun to display them someday. He also decided to keep his Kukui nut necklace that they put around his neck when he arrived and he got a nice hat to round out his souvenirs.

I had a hard time finding what I wanted. I saw a few pieces of jewelry that were beautiful but I am getting to the point where I have too much beautiful jewelry to wear often enough to signify the cost. Instead I opted for a beautiful serving dish for parties. Made of Koa wood and hand carved it is beautiful and functional… look in my old age I am getting practical!

I love your Tiki pole statue. Where did you buy it on Kauai? I'm going in April and would love one! paul100@comcast.net
