Michigan: Time at Grandmas

There was cooking and baking and dishes and more baking and more cooking and even more dishes. All in all in the five days we were there between the four of us we made a thanksgiving turkey dinner, a lemon meringue pie, my mother-in-laws rock star blueberry pie (which was a huge hit), five dozen chocolate chip cookies, two dozen oatmeal raisin cookies and more and more and more… Needless to say by the time we left grannies freezer was filled up with yummy things to eat and we rolled out rather than walked out. I must have gained 10 pounds in those few days alone, or that is what it felt like.

I miss so many things about having family close but with a child those feelings are now exponential. It was so amazing to be around so many family members. Each would take their ‘turn’ holding the baby, often jokingly fighting over who got him next. A baby is such a joy to have around; often he was our main entertainment. I got so many breaks as others entertained my Little Cricket and he loved all the attention. It just makes me that much sadder that this little weekend get together cannot be a monthly occurrence. I cannot wait until I live close to family again.

Of course between all the cooking and the baby love we played so many games. My mother and grandma played countless games of double boarded scrabble. We played card games and often my Little Cricket was at the table with us. This is how I grew up, with games and food and laughter all surrounding the table from the time I can remember. This is how I want to raise my son. Full of family and laughter. I am determined to make it happen; it will just involve a lot of traveling. Good thing I like to go go go!

I was having such a great time with my family. However I was also totally bummed out too. This weekend was planned for months and it was the only time Ms. Sweetie could get off of work. It also happened to fall on the exact weekend that my sister-in-law planned my niece’s big five year old birthday party. So not only did I miss her little party, I also missed my in-laws who flew in for the event. It was one of those moments where I was wishing I could be in two places at once. Mr. Rogue of course went, and it looked like a totally amazing party.

I'm so happy I got to see my mom and she got to meet her newest Great Grandchild! Her seventh!, Seven children, seven grandchildren and now seven great grandchildren. It doesn't get any better than that. And yes, we ate like piggies!
