The Getty, At the Top of the List

Since Ms. Pixie is getting out of LALA land soon I asked her where she wanted to go. Of course everyones top pick is The Getty a beautiful museum on top of a mountain overlooking Los Angeles. Neither of us were feeling 100% this morning but then again I never really want to leave my home nest often nowadays. But we dragged ourselves out anyways… it was after all a gorgeous day and we had plans damnit!

Not only does the Getty have amazing artwork here they also boast gorgeous gardens and amazing architecture. Seriously I have been here at least 100 times and I never get sick of it. Being with someone who hasn’t been here as often or with someone seeing it for the first time is a special treat because then I can live through their joy.

I always like to take the same route, past the beautiful buildings, following the flow of water through the various fountains and bubbling brook, through the gardens and ending at the giant waterfall and bogenvia maze.

And then finally climbing the stairs and ending at the beautiful vista of downtown Los Angeles. Up here you feel like you are on the top of the world. Ms. Pixie agreed!

Only after drinking up all the outdoor awesomeness do I lead my guests back to the buildings and onto explore the vast Getty art collection. There is the permanent collection which holds some of my all-time favorite paintings like Van Gogh and Monet. I never get tired of those rooms no matter how many times I see them.

And then I always stop at a painting I have seen before but maybe something new attracts me. The benefit of visiting such a vast collection over and over again is that I really get to know the pieces and something I may have overlooked before becomes a new treasure.

Of course so much walking leads me to taking more and more breaks. Thankfully the Getty has many many many benches scattered around for poor aching pregnant bodies.

I wanted to push on however to see a traveling collection of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography. I think my favorite was Lady, a photo of Lisa Lyon that was a beautiful balance between the feminine and masculine sides of this woman.
