Babymoon: The Most Beautiful Drive

We woke up at 7AM to some clouds as per usual however a few hours later when we were actually ready to leave the hotel all packed and having eaten we were finally seeing the first sunny day since arriving in Monterey Bay.

THE EARLY MORNING LEFT US WITH A BEAUTIFUL CLOUDY SUNRISE

Since it was sunny the day we were leaving I was a little sad, however I was also excited for the great light as we planned on driving up the coast on the way home. It was going to take us an extra hour to get home (which was a little bit of a bummer) but the stretch between Monterey Bay and lala land is some of the most beautiful in the world. One part in particular, the famous seventeen mile drive which includes the Pebble Beach Golf Course, was part of today’s route.

There were a billion turnoffs and of course we stopped at nearly all of them. It was such a FANTASTIC afternoon and we were both clicking happily away. Stopping all those times made our trip even longer and well I also got distracted by the tons of birds that were along the coastline. Basically it took us four hours to drive 50 miles but oh my word our souls were so filled with the beauty of it all.

There were a bunch of expected birds, gulls and cormorants were practically everywhere. And then I was able to see some unexpected visitors trying to find some food along the water. I was just so dang happy to be BIRDING at all. I haven’t been cleared for exercise or carrying even my medium birding lens since I got pregnant. Now that I am in the third trimester my OBGYN has given me permission to do some things. I didn’t realize how much I missed all of this!

We were able to spot a few animals along the water as well. One rock was completely full of California Fur Seals and of course the ever present, constantly begging, almost tame California Ground Squirrels were everywhere.

When we were getting near the road we would turn off the coast toward inland we decided to stop for lunch. The light was ALMOST perfect for sunset photos and we wanted to be sure to be on the water when that sun set. The lunch spot we found was awesome. Right on the water we sat out on the balcony and enjoyed Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Avocado sandwiches. Best food I have ever eaten I swear! Although the food was amazing and I was hungry I am sure I was just so happy at the moment being on that balcony with my man that anything would have tasted delicious.

Our late lunch put us just in time to get some fantastic sunset photos. It was officially the golden hour, that perfect twenty minutes when there is just enough light to still take clear photos but when that light is diffused and low. We couldn’t have timed it better if we tried.

Sadly once the sun went down we still had five hours to go. After being in and out of the car all day that was daunting, however not our biggest problem. I started getting car sick and nauseous and Mr. Rogue started not feeling well either. The road we were on was WINDY and at some parts right on the edge of some pretty major cliffs. It was pitch black and the fog had come in. Not exactly the best driving conditions when you are feeling well. It wasn’t like you could put the cruse on. Needless to say the next hours were not as amazing. We did make it home in one piece with both of us sickies taking the wheel at different times.

Although I enjoyed our little four day babymoon it was so good to be home!
