Mythical Birding Bike Guy

My sleep time, my waking time, my body clock are just all off. I had no problem falling to sleep last night (because I hadn’t slept in 24 hours) but I was up not so bright eyed too early (because I was still on east coast time). No worries, I would just put that time to good use and good use this morning was pancakes. We all woke up slowly and after a good breakfast tried to decide what to do with our day. There were several options for adventure with our out of town guests; Hollywood, the beach, Santa Monica pier and promenade, relax at home and chill. In the end we decided on a combination, we would spend the day out exploring Santa Monica and this evening we would bbq at the house.

Santa Monica is always fun to take guests too. There is an outdoor strip where performers entertain and shops and food abound. There isn’t any driving traffic on this street so it is a great place to bring little ones who want to run unfettered. And then just a short walk away is the ocean, the beach, the pier and a park. With so many fun things to see and do it was perfect for our needs. Today happened to be the Farmers Market (which I had been wanting to explore) so we strolled around for a while. Mrs. Penn even picked up some Kale, she had a special recipe treat she wanted us all to try later tonight. The promenade also happened to be hosting a health activity with booths strewn all down the strip. Many were giving away free things so the kids got a bunch of fun stuff.

MR. PENN WITH HIS LITTLE GIRL

Mr. Rogue has known the Penn’s forever (aka high school), even before Mr. & Mrs. Penn became a Mr. & Mrs. When they were all young and carefree and my husband was so SUPER BUFF. Cutie! I love this photo of all of them, they just look so happy. And I am so happy to now be a part of their long standing friendship. People like this in our lives, people that have known us for so long, are priceless. My only wish is that they lived closer.

MR. & MRS. PENN AND THEIR KIDS NOW

After we were done exploring the promenade we headed over to the pier and the park. It was a Saturday so of course it was a little crowded and it is July so of course it was a little hot but the adults and the kids had a fantastic time. Especially once we ran into the animal guys. I mentioned that there were performers of all kinds; musicians, dancers & singers, but also there are the people who bring their unusual pets to play. Of course for a few dollars you can hold or touch them. This trip we ran into a snake guy… no thank you. An iguana guy, still eww but well maybe just one touch. But then we ran into the birding bike guy. I had heard about him but until today I had never seen him. The birding bike guy is a man who bikes around Santa Monica with his hodgepodge crew of birds. His bike is actually modified into several perching areas and the birds go where he goes. TOO COOL. I think I was just as excited as the kids with this last one.

I FINALLY GOT TO MEET THE BIRDING BIKE GUY

And then we made it to the park where the kids got to run around and play. The sand was hot hot hot but we all had fun zipping around. I even stole the little boy for a while and we played on the swings. AHHHHH I cannot wait to have a child of my own. Love little kids and their little giggles and their little squeals of glee!

Mr. & Mrs. Penn have the best kids ever. They are so super polite and sweet, I just want to gobble them up! As someone who has been wanting kids for a while it is hard to be around them so much. It feels like everyone in my life has them and I am desperate to join the club. The only positive side is that I still have time, I still have hope, but oh how hard it is to wait. I get to see a lot of moms interact with their kids. And with each example of parenthood I see things that I really would like to do when I have kids. I always learn so much and Mrs. Penn has a particularly fantastic amount of patience and a way of talking to her kids that sooths them. Tucking that tidbit away for later use for sure.

One thing with hanging out with kids is that you need to be flexible. We were starting to get hungry and trying to decide where to go. One place we picked had a half hour wait but a meltdown was fast approaching. With one of the kids being a picky eater our options were limited but not wanting to wait we rushed to find another option. Rusty’s it happened to be, a surfing beach place right off the pier. I was a little skeptical but the food and service were actually not that bad.

We were tired after we ate so we headed back home, with a quick pit stop to the grocery store for a few necessities. Not only did Mrs. Penn have a recipe to share but Mr. Penn had a salmon dish he wanted to try. At home the boys started to work on the salmon while Mrs. Penn started her Kale surprise. SERIOUSLY I thought she was a little crazy, Kale baked with just a tiny bit of salt. It didn’t sound that pleasant but I was astounded when it came out tasting like popcorn. OH MY WORD, this might just be the perfect way to satisfy my salt chip craving in a healthy way. It was delicious!

I AM SO BLESSED WITH A MAN WHO LOVES TO COOK

Since Mrs. Penn’s sister lives in the area we invited her over along with her husband and adorable baby girl. My heart melted at her WIDE smile. That’s one happy baby. So the 9 of us had a BBQ complete with Mr. Penn’s cedar plank, chili rubbed, honey drizzled salmon (I will have to get the recipe for both the Kale and the Salmon and feature them on the blog since both were fantastic). After we ate we took our drinks out back, a little time hanging out by the fire pit before we took our tired heads to bed.

We were sad to see everyone go the next day. I love having a house full of friends and food and clutter and voices.
