A Rush Trip to Charlotte

I flew to Charlotte to visit my parents for a week. I haven’t seen my parents in exactly a year. A WHOLE YEAR! That is just wrong. I half heartily was thinking about visiting this winter while they were in Florida but with getting my real estate licence, the move into the new house, holidays and other travels it just never seemed like the right time. But when my mom got sick NOW became the right time. I jumped on a plane.

LOVE HOW THE USA HAS SUCH VARIED TOPOGRAPHY

About a week ago I got a scary call from my mom. Lately she hadn’t been feeling very well; first hot then cold she thought she had perhaps hit menopause. But then one night she woke up late feeling nauseous. She went to the rest room and ended up passing out for a moment. My dad ran in, got her water and got her back to bed. They were concerned but became even more so when the next night the same thing happened... this time she lost consciousness for 7 minutes. A worried trip to the emergency room resulted in a full workup of tests. Their initial concerns were all terrifying. It could be a brain tumor, a stroke or a heart attack. I didn’t want any of those words associated with my mother.

MY MOMS POOR FACE GOT BANGED WHEN SHE FAINTED

Thankfully all her tests came back perfect, nothing was wrong, they sent her home calling it a Vagal Experience... basically they didn’t know what was wrong. We are VERY thankful that nothing horrible is wrong but it frustrating not knowing exactly what is wrong. One of the most likely hypothesis was that her blood pressure medication was off, combined with dehydration. They changed her blood pressure medication and she started drinking a ton of Gatorade and water and although the fainting has stopped she still feels off. Dad is monitoring her blood pressure three to four times a day and over the course of the week I was visiting she started feeling a little better as each day passed.

MOM WASNT THRILLED WITH DADDY'S CONSTANT MONITORING

One of the side effects of her recent illness is that she gets SUPER hot. Therefore the air conditioning was on FULL BLAST the entire time I was there. Since the weather in Charlotte was super warm all I brought was summer clothes. So basically all week I froze. Mom leant me a sweater and I just piled the Afghans on. I wasn’t about to complain too much, I just wanted mom to be comfortable but DANG it was cold.

Although feeling better she wasn’t feeling 100% by any means. She would go through spurts where she felt pretty great and then suddenly she would get dizzy or hot. It was weird not having her be able to do all the things we normally do. We usually go birding together and although she tried once she just wasn’t feeling up to spending long hours outside looking for birds.

SHE TRIED TO COME BIRDING WITH ME BUT JUST WASNT UP TO IT

Usually she is like a little mini energizer bunny going going going going full speed all the time but this trip she took it easy. We sat and relaxed more this trip then we ever have before. She would sew, dad would edit photos, mom and I would blog or we just relaxed playing their new game (which was SUPER fun) Pegs & Jokers.

THE NEW OH SO FUN PEGS & JOKERS GAME

We didnt spend all our time sitting around. We did manage to squeeze in quite a bit of fun as well and when mom wasn’t feeling well we cut plans short or took a break. There were moments when she felt completely fine, and of course we acted like complete goofballs like we always do. We are just a bunch of silly kids sometimes having singing conversations (where everything you say has to be said in SONG), joking around or just being weird.

More than anything I was just happy that my mom seemed to be doing better, we all pray that she gets better and better and no more fainting spells. I was excited just to be with them, to see with my own eyes that everything is ok. I love my parents so much.

I am feeling better, especially since your visit. Thank you for caring so much that you'd fly all the way out to see us.
