Panama City Florida: Our Little House on the Gulf

OUR LITTLE HOUSE ON THE GULF

So after the catastrophe of travel, see yesterdays post, we finally arrived this morning in Panama City… the sauna of Florida. My selective memory appalls me sometimes. I mean I grew up in Michigan, we had PLENTY of muggy summer days, but having lived the past 7 years in Los Angeles has made me a weather pansy. I just can’t handle the heat and oh boy that first blast of muggy hotness that was Panama Cities weather hit me like a ton of sweaty bricks. Thank goodness the gem of a house we rented for our party of 13 is located directly on the beach, as in only 25 feet from our house, as in direct access to at least some type of breezes off the water. Did I mention that the house also had air conditioning with a wall of windows so if I so choose I could sit indoors and watch the waves from the comfort of man made deliciously cold air. Not that I did sit indoors, I was outside, but the KNOWLADGE that it was there waiting for me allowed me the strength to live through that week. I’m in love!

THE OFFICIAL HEADQUARTERS OF THE HOUSE

My favorite part is officially the back deck. With its tall beach captain chairs (of which there were only three – and yes we did fight over them) and a truly awesome view; it easily became the headquarters for the next week. The whole group spent most of our time there. Me… I was sitting under the umbrella, in the shade with 70 sunblock on. It was PURE deliciousness.

MR. ROGUE AND I, OUR FAV PLACE IN THE HOUSE FOR SURE

I switched between water, diet coke, and Friday’s Frozen Creamsicle drinks all day long. It was so hot that I, and everyone else for that matter, ended up drinking three times what we normally did. Those Creamsicle were SO AMAZINGLY GOOD. I mean seriously they were like those Creamsicle push pops you had as a kid combined with alcohol. So tasty!

THIS IS THE LIFE

I never got tired of watching the ocean. One day someone even spotted shark…. Or should I say that they spotted a fin, which gullible me thought was a shark. Mr. Pittsburgh was kind enough to have mercy on me and explained how sharks move differently than dolphins, and that the ‘shark’ I was looking at was in fact a group of dolphins. The people in the water were as scared of that fin as I was and they RAN out of the water. I can’t say that I blame them. Thankfully the dolphins hunted and played right in front of our deck. I managed to get an ok shot of one of them jumping in the air. Only took 174 photos to get this one.

Of course the main point of this vacation wasn’t to hang out at the beach, it was to spend some time with family. Mr. Rogue’s sister, Mrs. Painter, lives with her husband and three kids near Atlanta Georgia. We only get to see them really once a year for Christmas or Thanksgiving.

This whole trip was Mr. Pittsburgh’s idea. He is the one who started the initial organization, made the plan of where we were going, and got us on the right track for finding a place right on the beach. We ended up having such a ‘fantastic’ time on this trip that we are already talking about the next one, possibly two years from now. It’s our hope that parents and the rest of our brothers and sisters from both sides can come. With our generations living so far apart from one another, trips like this vacation to Panama City, offers us time to be together as a family! Thanks Mr. Pittsburgh, you are the best, and this was a GREAT IDEA!

MR. PITTSBURGH

I have to say that I have a super controlling nature. Sometimes… ok often… it gets in the way of me relaxing and having a good time. I am usually so twisted up in cruise directing that I forget to take a bit of time to smell the roses. Mrs. Painter was a complete rock star this week, she organized all the cooking, the groceries, the house, so that by the time I got there Saturday there was very little for me to direct. I have to say that she gave me the biggest gift on this trip, she clubbed my little control freak in the head, and then she handed me a drink. LOVE HER for that!

As well as hanging out with all the adults I got to spend quite a bit of time with my nieces and nephew. I know my mom told me that kids grow up fast but HOLY CAMOLIE these kids have grown so fast. Mom.. why is it the older I get the more right you get. Ms. Pixie is now a gorgeous young woman and since I didn’t get to know her as a child I am just making up for lost time in getting to know her as a young adult.

Ms. Fairy is getting more mature being torn between child and teenager. This girl grew two feet since I saw her last year. She now wears a shoe two sizes bigger than mine and she is almost as tall. Did I mention this kid is only 10. I talked to her mom about getting her into basketball or volleyball because this is going to be one very tall girl.

Perhaps the most changed for me was Mr. Dragon. He went from a crazy ball of random energy not making a ton of sense most of the time to an adorable little boy that would sit down often to cuddle. Watch out people this kid is out to steal your heart.

Our first dinner out, Sharky’s, was right on the water. We sat under large awnings in the open air sipping margaritas and cracking jokes. And OMG those margaritas were GINORMOUS. When they came to the table Mr. Rogue’s face lite up like a little kid at Christmas. Now that’s a drink!

MR. ROGUE IS SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY

I am so thankful to spend time with the family and to have a whole week of Mr. Rogue without work. This man, he is the love of my life, and even if I may melt into a big huge sweaty pile of goo I am going to treasure these times in my life.

Vacations are the best memories of you kids growing up. And yes, kids do grow up too quickly, for me anyway. We always had such a wonderful time on our vacations and we all had an opportunity to see a lot of America too. Hopefully, your brother, wife and kid can join you next time.....
