San Diego Zoo: The Birds & Around Town

Although I love all the animals at the zoo, there is something special about the many aviaries that you can visit. By walking right into the cages I can eliminate all those pesky bars. And unlike birding in the wild these birds are used to humans around them, come lower to feed and bath and basically stay put. It’s so much nicer when trying to get their photos... these birds cooperate.

Although this photo is not in focus I loved the effect that the low lighting and fast moving birds created in this shot.

Along with photoing the caged birds there are the inevitable wild bird, aka freeloaders, who either get into the enclosures or pick at the food left behind from the animals and the humans. I caught a beautiful photo of a song sparrow, nicely lit and singing his little heart out.

I also found a California Towhee bathing in one of the streams of water set out for the elephants. I really loved his funny sticking out feathers.

We managed to get through the entire zoo, no small fete and then since neither of the girls had been in the city before, we decided to take a drive through San Diego.

It really is such a beautiful city.
