Saginaw, MI: Shaking the Family Tree

With this visit to my grandmother’s house I can see how much the years of her hard life has taken its toll. Raising 8 kids, losing a husband, financial struggles and hard knocks; this woman has been through it all.

LOVE YOU GRANDMA

It is sad to know that she is not going to be with us forever and that it is nearing the time when we will have to say goodbye to the older generation.

MY MOM AND GRANDMA

I spent quite a bit of time today with my grandmother digging around delicate old photo albums from the mid 40s on.

We hunched over the books, our heads bent close, as her soft voice spoke of times before I was born, a cloud of her memories whisking us back to her younger years; weddings, christenings, BBQs and reunions.

MY GRANDMA’S WEDDING DAY TO HER FIRST HUSBAND, MY REAL GRANDFATHER WHO I NEVER GOT TO MEET

Everywhere I turn in this house there are whispers from the past. I love to sit as my grandmother and mother reminisce about a time long before I was born, about events and decisions that brought them to where they are and shaped where I am today. I adore hearing how they took on great challenges and the demons of life and wrestled them back into the darkness. This is my blood, this is my tribe and the power I feel when I am with them helps me know that I too can concur the demons that are riding my soul someday.

You all have the same eyes: BEAUTIFUL! One of my fondest memories is staying over night and looking through all of her photographs.
