Saginaw, MI: Memories Up North

When I was growing up, every other month, my family and I would always go 'up north' to spend the weekend at grandma’s house. The house was up in the woods, about four hours away, and it felt like another universe from the suburbs where we lived.

As kids we loved the adventure of those simple country days. Instead of pavement and the noise of traffic there were miles and miles of woods and the whisper of birds. We spent hours slaying dragons and imagining our own new magical worlds, days out catching turtles and frogs and endless simple summers just being kids.

In the evenings after dinner the entire family would gather around the table and the games would come out.

Parcheesi, Malice, Yatzee and Euchre were most often our games of choice.

We would spend hours and hours hunched over the table until the wee hours of the night.

Grandma, as she gets older, will sometimes ‘modify’ the rules to fit the situation but we humor her and let most of them slide. It is after all only a game.

WE COULD CALL IT CHEATING BUT WE PREFER TO CALL IT MODIFYING

Of course as a kid I got my butt kicked often, I was after all surrounded by gaming masters, but gradually as the years went by I got better and better until, finally, I can now sometimes even win!

YEA NOW I CAN SOMETIMES WIN

Today I go to Grandma’s house and still enjoy the sweet serenity of getting away from the city.

I may even appreciate this magical place more now that I am living in the middle of lala land, one of the largest cities in the United States, which has more than its share of chaos. Although getting to grandmas isn't as easy as a quick few hour drive in the car like when I was a child, the joy I have being enveloped into my grandmothers warm embrace, the peace I can achieve in this house, the happy memories it brings and the comfort I find in the familiar really soothes my soul.

Mr. Rogue recently got a new iPad so now I can keep up with my blogging when I am away in style. Instead of having to handwrite my posts while I was away from home and come home only to have to type them all out now I can just copy and paste. Thank you, I adore you Mr. Rogue.

So many memories, remember the time all the grandkids buried themselves in the sand by the side of the house? It seems like yesterday but it's been over 25 years now. I'm glad you have so many wonderful memories of her home. That is exactly why she wanted this property - for her grandchildren's memories.
