Nerdy Birdy: Acton Water Birds

A few days ago I was visiting my parents in Acton and the park they were at was fantastic for birding. Near the end of our daily walk at the park, or sometimes three times a day walk, there was both a pond and a small river. And you know what they say if there is water there will be birds.

THE SMALL POND

The best part today was the fact that there were a slew of Common Mergansers, a new bird for me, and one was MALE which are always the prettiest.

The thing is that Mergansers are generally super shy and in the past I have only seen this type of bird from very very very far away.

However, today because this particular pond was so small, I felt lucky to be able to get pretty great shots of the birds.

The small pond also held a few common ducks and then there was a couple of mallards. Ahh I love the males beautiful green head when the light strikes it just right he illuminates into something fantastic.

Although the American Wigeon does not have a full head of green like the mallard I still love his ‘eye makeup’ stripe of green.

While waiting to see if the Mergansers would come a bit closer to me I spotted a red winged blackbird perched on top of some cattails singing his little heart out. Bird songs are often sang to mark territory or to attract females and songs are always sung more joyously I feel in the spring.

Ahh another lovely day with me and the birds. You just can’t beat the beauty and serenity nature has to offer.

I really loved this park too. Fortunately you got the best two days of the two weeks we were there.
