Like Mother, Like Daughter

This week I went to visit my mom and asked her to help me figure out exactly why my lemon meringue pie, which is from an old cookbook, does not come out exactly like hers. The question resulted in some discussion and then the deal to make the pie together. So she whipped out her cookbook and my mouth dropped.

MOM’S COOKBOOK

Remember few weeks ago, I posted a recipe that my mother and I cooked at my grandmother’s house, and I was fascinated with my grandma’s very old, falling apart, ancient cookbook, see by clicking here. Well my mom’s cookbook, the same Betty Crocker Cookbook just made in a different year, is falling apart just like grandma’s.

THE BINDING IS CRACKING APART

The pages are beginning to yellow and there are signs of how much this book was handled day in and day out for decades.

Mom’s favourite pages are lovingly spattered with goo and you can tell that this meringue recipe was LOVED!

And funny enough my mom got this Betty Crocker Cookbook as a gift for her wedding, just as my grandmother got hers for her wedding present. The only difference is that my mom’s was given in 1978 and my grandma’s was given in 1951.

Hee hee, oh the implication of said gift, and how it reflects the ideology of the time. This is a super cute post, I love cook books and have a special appreciation for ones that look like these! :)
