Galapagos Islands: Kicker Rock

The cruise we were on, Celebrity Expedition, managed in general two excursions a day; the evening before the lead cruise director would give you your options for the following day. It was a 7 - 10 minute lecture on what you would see on the long walk or the short walk or any optional boat rides being offered. You were then allowed to select which you would like to do. Mostly Mr. Rogue and I choose to the long walks, it allowed for the most time on the island and to see the most, hey we are here and since there are SO MANY amazing places to go in this world I doubt we will ever be coming back so we may as well see as much as we can.

Sometimes, like today, the boat offered more than the two options and we jumped at those extra opportunities too even if they were at the crack of dawn. Let me tell you this cruise was no lazing around, sleeping in, drinking all night relaxation… this was an adventure, get up at the crack of dawn every day moving marathon!

OVERNIGHT WE SAILED FROM NORTH SEYMOUR TO BALTRA

This morning for our first excursion we took the sunrise ride out to Kicker Rock, named so because it kind of looks like a boot from one angle. The rock soars 500 feet straight up in the air and is the last remains of a lava cone eroded by the sea and lies off the Coast of San Cristobal Island.

WE WERE ON THE SHADE SIDE OF THE ROCK, THE SUN WAS PEAKING AROUND THE CORNER

It is a famous natural monument in the Galapagos and I was super excited to be boating right up to it. Because it was so early we were really hoping that the lighting would be incredible. We boated up on the shade side and as we got closer and closer the rock soared higher and higher… our little zodiac was positively dwarfed. Frigatebirds, red billed tropicbirds and gulls swooped around overhead and although it was too dark to photo them on the rocky boat in the low light it was still a fabulous site to see.

SEE THE TINY BOAT AT THE BOTTOM AND THE TINY BIRDS ABOVE

We bumped and rocked over the waves and made our way to the other side of the rock when we passed by the small chasm in the rock. Mr. Rogue was able to gnab the best shot of our boat on this trip perfectly centered in the space between. Great job honey for getting this one in a million shot!

SEE OUR NOT SO TINY BOAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CHASM

Our little boat headed away from the rock so we could get the famous Kicker Rock vantage… the lighting was incredible… simply stunning.

KICKER ROCK BATHED IN THE EARLY MORNING LIGHT

We all stayed suspended in silence for a few minutes drinking in the view before heading back to the boat. That’s when I noticed that the moon was still out and I was able to make this shot of the rock and the moon. I love the colors and composition.

THE PEAK OF THE ROCK WITH THE MOON

What an amazing morning… and there were still two more excursions to go. We headed back to the boat for our breakfast wreathed in smiles.
