Galapagos Islands: Baltra to Quito

WE SAILED BACK TO BALTRA AND THE AIRPORT

Of course leaving was a pain. We had to pack everything back away and packing to go home is never as fun as packing to go away to someplace wonderful. As our zodiac sailed away from our boat we took one more shot. Bye bye Galapagos!

We got to the airport two hours before we were supposed to board. Mr. Rogue and I spend a little while walking through the outdoor souvenir shops and got a few things for the people taking care of our animals and house at home. But there were not a ton of shops and most of them had the same exact things so it did not take very long.

The airport is just a large fenced in warehouse like structure which gave us protection from the sun but not from the heat.

THE BALTRA AIRPORT IS NOT FANCY BY ANY MEANS

Although we were tired and hot at least we were happy with a killer tan. Because the Galapagos Islands are located on the equator we decided to use 50 sports sun block the entire time. We applied every morning before our first excursion and then another layer in the afternoon before our second excursion. I was surprised that even with all that sun block we still got a dark tan. That’s some strong sun.

LOOK AT THAT TAN

I didn’t have any problems with the camera equipment being too heavy on the flight back to Quito and since I didn’t have an issue on the way there either it made me feel a little bit silly for all the stress I went through trying to decide whether or not to bring the big lens. That was a blessing and an aggravation. Once we landed in Quito it was back on a bus to the same hotel we stayed at previously. We had just enough time to clean up a bit before heading out to our local market tour.

We went to a booth city but it had all the same things that the booths in the Baltra airport market had this morning. The second stop we made was in a nicer part of town and we found several things we liked to bring home as souvenirs. Mr. Rogue and I have started collecting mini wood carved statues that remind of us the vacation. On this trip we picked up a Giant Tortoise for the Galapagos Islands and an Alpaca for Ecuador.

And then a tiny hand painted bird because I liked it.
