BBBS 36: Christmas Fun in the Kitchen

I picked up Ms. Little and her sister for a day in the kitchen making gingerbread houses. This is an activity I did last year with my nieces and nephews that was so much fun I just had to do it again this year, a new tradition maybe? So last year we made the entire gingerbread house with graham crackers and store bought cake icing... the graham crackers worked out GREAT however the store bought cake icing was a nightmare. This year after some research I decided to use royal icing, a sticker handmade version at home. Ms. Little and her sister made the icing and I even let her use the big girl mixer this time herself.

It is so awesome to see this little girl bloom, she is learning so much. Two years around Christmas time we were in the kitchen making Christmas cookies. Time really does fly when you can see change so quickly in little kids.

Once the royal icing was made we set about assembling the houses. I tried some variations on the design and added some supports which I thought would help. They worked really well and I think next year we may add a few more supports... or maybe even brave making real gingerbread!

After the houses chilled we started with the decorations which is my favourite part. There is something about a table filled with candy to make anybody happy!

We had such a great time with our decorations, teasing each other and stuffing our faces with the “Extra” candy. I think they turned out really well.

We put the houses in the refrigerator to cool yet again, icing holds better when cold and I wanted to make sure they at least made it home with their houses still together.

While the houses chilled we played with the Wii. The inventors of this game were genius it is such a big hit every time they come over. Favourite games of the night were Mario Cart which I ROCK AT...

And boxing... yea I suck at that one.

At least I saved myself some face by telling the girls that we all can’t be GREAT at everything, to try new things but that everyone has their own unique talents. AKA your big sister is scrappy in a real fight and could probably take someone out but she cannot Wii box.
