Europe Day 24, Athens: Broke Down Train Wrecks

Ok so none of us wanted to pick up and go sightseeing in 100 degree weather but we had sat two days at the pool and this was our last day in Athens before heading off home so we forced ourselves to go. The Acropolis we decided could not be missed.

So we had breakfast, got in a cab and arrived at the Acropolis half-heartedly ready to see some ancient buildings. What no one told us was that you had to hike up Mount Everest to get to the Acropolis. We tried to play the “Oh but our poor pregnant friend card” to see if they had a shuttle or a helicopter or something to get us to the top but they just shook their head, everyone has to go up the hard way. OH AND HARD IT WAS.

I DON’T WANT TO CLIMB

It isn’t that the path was that bad, it was just the fact that it was so hot, we were tired from weeks of walking and hiking, did I mention it was 100 degrees.

AT LEAST I HAD MY UMBRELLA TO PROVIDE SOME SHADE

At one point I considered faking an ankle injury and sending Ms. Dancer to go alone. I could wait with the pregnant one and Ms. Dancer could take the pictures… it would be just like we were there right. But in the end the demon lost and the angel won and I kept my wishful thinking to myself. I was proud when we all made it to the top.

HOT AND SWEATY BUT WE DID IT DANG IT

And the Acropolis was beautiful.

And since the Acropolis site was situated on a mountain the views of the surrounding city were gorgeous.

A VIEW FROM A HOLE IN THE WALL

I would like to say that I am glad we went, I am sure in a month from now I could say that because I would have forgotten some of the pain, but there was a moment or an hour where I felt like I was going to pass out I was so hot. We were broke down train wrecks, all we needed was a caboose.

MY FACE IS SO RED!

Once we were ready to leave we had to fight back through the masses of people down the mountain before we could finally get into an air conditioned cab. Mr. Air Conditioner inventor, you are my hero right now!

SO MANY PEOPLE

We managed to muscle up enough strength to do a little bit more last minute shopping before we grabbed dinner, and before dinner we decided to stop into a bakery we had been eyeing. What we deserved it after the day we had!

THE BEST LOOKING DESERTS EVER

The smell in that bakery stole your senses and bent them into a frenzied buying spree. All I know is that it was uncontrollable… we knew we were leaving early in the morning, we knew these deserts were too delicate to take with us, we knew I am sure that these were super sweet and we should purchase with caution; knowing did not prevent us from folly.

I blame it on the smells that stole my senses.

LOOK AT THOSE SMILES AND THOSE GLAZED EYES – WE WERE NOT OURSELVES I TELL YOU

By the time we got back to our hotel room and spread out our spoils I was shaking my head in exasperation. Seven pieces of pastry; what was I thinking!

I LOST MY MIND

And then I bit into one and all my anxt at getting too many disappeared. So what if I had a stomach ache, these things were AMAZING!

BAKLAVA STUFFED WITH A CARAMEL FILLED BROWNIE

Actually with the pastries my outlook on packing my bag seemed to improve slightly. Sadly it as midnight and we had to catch our cab for the airport at 3:00 AM and this is what my bed looked like. So I ate my pastry and packed one last time. It was a little sad, this was it our trip had almost come to an end.

First of all I can't believe you hiked a mountain in a dress and flip flops. Secondly, You DID NOT eat all those pastries!! But ohhh they look sooo yummy. Why haven't I found a bakery like that in all of America??
