Our Little Hairy Potter

My father allegedly has allergies. I say allegedly because my parents owned both a cat and a dog when I was young but as I grew up he suddenly developed allergies. So we never had a dog or a cat growing up therefore I always knew that when I finally moved out on my own I would get a dog. That goal was achieved and then over the course of living on my own for 13 years I have added two cats and another dog to that wish list.

I love my animals but especially with my dogs I am a strict mommy. I like a dog that behaves and I have spent a good amount of time with Rogue’s training to make sure that he behaves. Rogue is perfect and sweet and I could not ask for a better dog. People are constantly trying to steal him or borrow him for long periods of time and thankfully I have never had a problem finding people to watch him while I am out of town. And then I got Phoenix who right now seems to be UNTRAINABLE.

She is constantly destroying the backyard, she chews everything she can reach and the jumping and the herding is enough to drive me and my occasional guests mad. She is however slowly learning and as I become more accustomed to her habits things are starting to finally go a little smoother.

One of our biggest issues was bedtime. I do not allow the dogs to sleep in our bed, instead they have their dog beds next to us and I could not get Phoenix to sleep in hers. I would get up randomly though the night and find her crammed under the bed where she very obviously does not fit. I could not for the life of me figure out why she preferred these uncomfortable places rather than the soft cushy bed next to me that I bought for her.

Over the course of the next month I figured out that because her last owners crated her all the time she just does not feel comfortable sleeping without feeling enclosed or protected by something surrounding her. I did not however want to crate her like her like they did so we found another alternative that she is ecstatic about. Please don’t judge but Phoenix she sort-of sleeps in the fireplace.

Now that is not as bad as Harry Potter sleeping in a cupboard under the stairs but we have started jokingly referring to her as Hairy Potter. Regardless of how weird it looks it really was the perfect solution. She is boxed in on three sides, she sleeps on the bed I bought for her AND she is happy as a clam there. SO we do what works for us and what works for her even if it is a little weird. My high maintenance diva puppy and her high maintenance diva ways.
