Nerdy Birdy: Bolsa Chica Conservatory

I spent the afternoon today at the Bolsa Chica Conservatory again but this time I was hoping to see some migratory birds and I was not disappointed. I ended up with eight more birds to cross off the bird list.

Already have crossed off the list

I really enjoyed playing with and working on my panning which I find to be super difficult. I think I am starting to get the hang of it. Here are some Brown Pelicans hunting for dinner.

I met a fellow birder today and we had a debate over the difference between the Reddish Egret and the Little Blue Heron. Since neither of us were sure which is which so I dove into some research when I got home. Seems like there are two proof positive ways to identify the two apart. One is that the red on the neck starts higher (1/4 of the way up) on the Little Blue Heron where the Reddish Egret’s reddish neck extends almost to the breast. The second is that the Reddish Egret has grey-black legs as opposed to the greenish yellow legs of the Little Blue Heron. Now I won’t mistake the two again.
