Photo Phriday: Birds

My recent vacation has pulled me into a new love for birds. This week I concentrated on getting photos of a few in my neighbourhood and bringing out an oldie Mr. Rogue took last year. Maybe there will be a lot more birds in the future.

Looks like a cowbird on your feeder!

I think sparrow #3 is an American Tree Sparrow.

Sparrow #2 is a male House Sparrow. Now that I think about it, Sparrow #3 might be a juvenile male house sparrow. It looks like he is in the process of changing plumage, and if he were a Tree Sparrow, he would have a white bar on his wingtips.

Ok, Sparrow #1 is a House Sparrow, obviously. The flying bird is a Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Props to my big sis for help on that one. The speckled belly threw me off, but apparently he is inbetween juvenile and adult - so no smooth grey belly for him! Finally, the bird perched on the white thing is a Cactus Wren. I couldn't see the brown head, so (again) thanks to my big sis (birwatcher extraordinaire) for help on that. Send me the unidentified orange billed goose (?) pic from Mexico and we'll see if my sister can help. She has suggested Black-bellied Whistling Duck based on the verbal description alone. Love you! It's so fun birding with you! Let's go on a birdwatching vacation together!

I find bird watching calming and exciting when you find that new species you've been hunting for - or climbing through the woods to capture that shot! It's fun!
